Owning a Beagle Puppy

Beagle PuppyDogs are excellent animals – loyal, kind, smart, and friendly. I picked up a beagle of my own a few weeks ago and named him Odie (short for the very awesome name Odysseus Maximus). I got him at eight weeks old, only a puppy, and I can’t say he hasn’t been a handful. I wanted to write a review on owning a puppy of the beagle breed so that I could express my feelings of getting the dog and help those of you who are considering getting your own beagle puppy make a decision. So take a look at my own experiences and advice here.

First of all, owning a puppy in general is a lot of responsibility, so don’t underestimate it. You need to spend almost all of your time with your dog at first, although it turns out to be well worth it. As a puppy, he’ll need to potty a lot, and won’t hesitate to go in the house unless you take him out regularly. Beagles have a reputation for being somewhat hard to potty train, but take them out every half hour as well as after his meals and naps and you should be fine. They may make a lot of noise, but usually only when alone, so stay with your dog while he’s a puppy as much as possible so he doesn’t get upset. Also get him a crate, as dogs have a natural instinct to stay in a closed and cozy area, just like a den in the wild.

Odie showed me that beagles are very affectionate and love their owners more than anything else, much like most other dog breeds. Your beagle will want to play with you, especially as a puppy, so be ready and willing to give him some exercise with play. Training will be a bit difficult, as beagles are easily distracted, but their wish to please will keep them easy enough to train as long as you know what you are doing. Beagles like to chew on things, so get them plenty of chew toys so they don’t try to eat your baby sister’s crayons like Odie did. But while there’s a lot of responsibility to take on, it’s rewarding because beagles are among the most loyal, friendliest, and cutest breeds around.

Owning a beagle puppy was a very enjoyable and fun experience for me, and I feel that I really picked the right breed. I would recommend this breed to anyone who wants a faithful companion who’s great with children and other animals. So long as you’re willing to put in the time and effort, it should be a great experience. But I want to hear from you. If you have a beagle, or any dog for that matter, tell me about it in the comments. I love to hear from you!
